YouTube Podcasts and Video Podcasts: A 2026 Growth Guide

How YouTube podcasts work in 2026: setup, RSS vs video, clips, Premium listening features and analytics, with sources.

Podcasts used to live in a separate app. On YouTube they now sit beside everything else, with their own badge, their own analytics and a growing set of listening tools for Premium subscribers. For a creator, that means a conversation recorded once can become a full episode, a handful of Shorts and a searchable archive.

This guide covers how YouTube’s podcast system works today, which format choices matter, and how to use clips without wrecking the show you worked hard to make.

How YouTube defines a podcast

YouTube’s own help page puts it simply: a podcast show is a playlist, and each episode is a video in that playlist. You create one in YouTube Studio through Create and then New podcast, or you convert an existing playlist using the Set as podcast option. Alternatively, audio-first shows can submit an RSS feed.

The rules are worth reading before you start. Include only full-length episodes, ordered the way a listener should hear them, and use a square thumbnail (YouTube recommends 1280 by 1280 pixels). Choose a specific title: YouTube warns that generic names such as “Podcast” can lead YouTube Music to show your channel name instead. Do not turn season trailers or clip playlists into podcasts.

Eligible shows can earn a Podcast badge, appear in YouTube Music, be spotlighted on youtube.com/podcasts and be recommended to viewers with similar interests, according to YouTube’s creator page.

Video-first or RSS-first?

This is the biggest decision, and the two routes behave differently.

Question Native video upload RSS import
What viewers see Your actual footage, or any visuals you make Show art as a static image
Control over each episode Full: thumbnail, chapters, cards, end screens Limited; feed changes do not always sync
Ads inside the audio Governed by normal YouTube policies Podcast content cannot contain advertisements, per the help page
Availability Wide Select countries and regions only

Those RSS limits come from YouTube’s help page, which also notes that RSS-delivered podcasts are available only on YouTube and YouTube Music, and that back-catalogue additions do not notify subscribers. If you want a real audience on YouTube rather than a mirror of your audio feed, native video gives you more levers.

What “video” should mean for an interview show

A video podcast does not need a studio. Imagine a two-person history show recorded at a kitchen table: a fixed wide shot, a second angle for reactions, clean audio and on-screen names. That is enough. What viewers dislike is a locked static image for ninety minutes with no reason to look at the screen.

Plan small visual beats instead: a map when places come up, a quote card for a bold claim, chapters so people can jump. Chapters also help the viewer who wants only one segment, which is often how new audiences find a show.

Clips: the bridge, not the replacement

YouTube’s creator page describes an AI-powered Video Clips feature in Studio that finds highlight moments in a long episode and generates shareable cutdowns. Treat its output as a first draft. Pick the moments with a clear question and answer, trim the lead-in, and make sure the clip ends in a place that makes sense on its own.

Two cautions from the help pages. Shorts made to promote a podcast don’t appear in YouTube Music, and clips should not live inside your podcast playlist. Keep them in separate playlists, with a pinned link back to the full episode.

The listening side: what changed for Premium viewers

On 28 May 2026 YouTube announced three Premium-only listening features, as reported by TechCrunch: AI-powered podcast recommendations, an Auto speed setting that adjusts playback during slower or denser passages, and an on-the-go mode with simplified controls. The report says the latter two were available on Android with iOS coming. TechCrunch also reported YouTube’s figures of more than 800 million hours of podcasts watched by Premium users in April 2026 and more than a billion monthly active users for YouTube Podcasts.

In September, Google’s Made on YouTube 2026 summary mentioned a Podcast Lineup of curated weekly summaries, and Podnews described a weekly spoken preview of recommended podcasts for Premium subscribers. Why it matters to you: more of your audience may listen with the screen off, so make sure the show works without visuals. Say what is on screen when it matters.

Reading podcast analytics honestly

YouTube Studio offers podcast-specific analytics covering views, watch time, average view duration, key moments for audience retention, traffic sources and top content. Use the key moments chart to find where listeners drop and where they replay. That is a script for your next intro.

If you are working towards monetisation, the watch hours calculator can help you estimate how many long episodes it may take to approach YouTube’s thresholds. YouTube notes that podcasters can earn through ads, fan funding and Shopping after joining the YouTube Partner Programme, and any sponsor reads must be disclosed.

Sponsors, disclosure and fairness

If a brand pays you to mention a product, YouTube’s help centre says the video should be marked as including paid promotion, and you remain responsible for local advertising laws. For RSS shows, YouTube says to disclose via the podcast details page or video settings. Make disclosure natural and early; listeners are generous with sponsors they are told about.

Some creators also use paid promotion for a launch episode. It can be a legitimate way to put a good show in front of more people, and options such as watch-time promotion exist, but creators must follow YouTube’s policies, there are no guarantees of results, and episodes that don’t hold attention won’t be rescued by it.

What we know as of October 2026

As of October 2026, the facts above reflect YouTube’s help pages and news coverage from May and September 2026. Rollout of new features is staged by platform and region, and the sources we read gave no firm dates for the Made on YouTube items. Check the official source for the latest.

What to do this week

  1. Decide video-first or RSS-first and write down why.
  2. Create the show in Studio with a specific title and a square thumbnail.
  3. Add chapters to your three most recent episodes.
  4. Cut three clips from your best episode and link each to the full show.
  5. Open podcast analytics and note one retention dip to fix in your next intro.

Frequently asked questions

Can I upload an MP3 as a podcast?

YouTube’s help page says episodes must be videos and that MP3s can’t be turned into podcasts directly. Use the RSS route, where available, or create a video file.

Should every episode be full length?

The podcast playlist should contain only full-length episodes. Keep trailers and clips elsewhere.

Do I need a camera?

No, but some visual reason to watch helps. Even basic webcam footage, graphics and chapters give the screen a job.

Conclusion

YouTube has made podcasting a first-class citizen, but the platform still rewards what viewers choose to stay for. Build a show people can watch, hear and skim, and use clips as doors, not substitutes.
