Retention and CTR Diagnostic

Studio gives you the numbers but not the diagnosis. Enter impressions, click-through rate, average view duration and video length and this tool tells you whether the weak link is your packaging, your opening or your topic, and what to test first.

How to use it

  1. Open YouTube Studio, then Analytics, then the video, and note impressions, impressions click-through rate, average view duration and views.
  2. Enter them below along with the video length.
  3. Read the diagnosis and the three-step test plan. Change one thing at a time.

How it works

Retention is average view duration divided by video length. Click-through rate is shown against the commonly cited 2 to 10 percent range, which varies a lot by channel, traffic source and audience. Retention bands are rules of thumb that differ by length: short videos usually hold a larger share of viewers than long ones.

A matrix of the two numbers produces the diagnosis: strong clicks with weak retention suggests the promise and the video are out of step; weak clicks with strong retention suggests good content with weak packaging; weak on both points to topic or audience fit.
